Healthy Islands

Healthy Islands - the next steps

The 11th Inter Island Public Health Forum was duly held in Guernsey 16th-19th May 2007.   Despite dense fog experienced on the first day, which made travel difficult for many and impossible for a some, the Forum overall was judged a huge success – for the content, social activities and for the opportunities it offered for networking.

The programme was as attached, links to the keynote presentations will be posted on this site shortly, together with pictures of some of the conference ‘highlights’.

A big ‘thank you’ to all those who attended, and ‘sorry not to see you’ for those unable attend this year.

Positive outcomes include the continuing development of island public health comparators, and a commitment to some shared child health ‘outcome indicators’.

At the AGM held at the conclusion of the Forum, Dr Vijay Kumar, Director of Public Health for Gibraltar was unanimously elected as the incoming President.   It was also unanimously agreed that the network continues to fulfil an important function, and that the next Forum would therefore be held in Gibraltar in the latter part of September 2008.

It was also agreed that this website would remain ‘live’ to allow inter-change of ‘island health’ news in between Forums.   We will therefore soon be including a ‘chat room’ - why not ‘bookmark’ this for future reference?

We look forward to a continuing lively interchange, exchanging news and sharing ‘best practice’ in island public health.

Best wishes to you all

Dr David Jeffs

Immediate Past President IIPHF
Director of Public Health and Strategy
States of Guernsey
