What is the Inter Island Public Health Forum?
The IIPHF is a loose confederation of health professionals and others with an interest in the special health needs of small island communities. Participants tend to be drawn from the English-speaking islands of North West Europe (Gibraltar is considered an honorary island for this purpose), but tentative links have been established with a similar group of health professionals working in the islands of the South Pacific, who also have their own Forum.
Professions represented include public health physicians and trainees, environmental health officers, health promotion specialists, occupational health practitioners, health and safety and disaster-planning experts, clinicians involved in providing services to populations (e.g., breast-screening) and many other health-related disciplines.
How did it start?
Credit for recognising the need for those charged with developing and providing health services for small island communities, to meet and discuss common problems and to share workable solutions, must be given to the Isle of Wight authorities, who organised the first IIPHF in the Isle of Wight in 1993.
